Captain Buffalo

A few years ago, a group of friends (Jon & Pete Reiling, Brian Grunert and Biff Henrich) created a short film for the Buffalo 48-hour Film Project. Their entry, "Captain Buffalo," is considered by many to be the "Citizen Kane" of five minute superhero movies; it also inspired the above illustration. See the original movie here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2Y_bIlF0X8. Thanks to Pete Reiling for his help with the artwork.

Straphanger

Spot illustration for UB. Every generation comes up with a fashion trend seemingly designed to outrage and bewilder its elders- but "ear gauging" has got to be the all-time, hands-down, retire-the-trophy champion.

Wooden Signs

A couple of years ago I noticed an old wooden ski trail sign at Kissing Bridge. Just for fun, I decided to replicate it in my woodshop; since then I've created a bunch. As it turns out, we don't need a bunch, so I'm going to be selling them through Aardvak Home Decor in Ellicottville, New York (www.aardvarkdecor.com). The perfect decorative objet for your gazillion-dollar rustic ski chalet!

Blackwing Sketch

I'm a sucker for drawing supplies and for breathless ad copy, so I had to get some of these Blackwing pencils. According to the website, "some of the world’s most legendary Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer and Academy Award winners have created with Blackwing pencils. The list of known users includes John Steinbeck, Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein and Chuck Jones, who proudly used Blackwings to create Bugs Bunny and countless other Looney Tunes characters." The pencils were introduced in the 1930s, discontinued in 1998 and recently revived by Palomino (http://www.pencils.com/brands/blackwing/).
I don't know if they'll help me join the ranks of the "most legendary," but they are pretty nice, and they feature that cool replaceable eraser cartridge.

Andrew Loomis

The latest addition to the Inkwell Studios Library- a reprint of Andew Loomis' 1943 figure drawing bible. I would've bought this one for the cover alone. In fact, I think I would've bought it just for the nifty signature.

The Larkin Building

The latest in a series of architectural prints we've been working on- Frank LLoyd Wright's Larkin Administration Building, one of Buffalo's great lost treasures. Built in 1904 - 1906, destroyed in 1950.

Batarangs

Handcrafting some Batarangs in the basement, just like that other guy.

Step One: He uses magnesium or something, but we start with Finnish birch plywood. After the basic shape is cut out with a jigsaw, we pencil in guidelines for the carving.

Step Two: We carve, sand and Dremel out a basic airfoil shape for each wing.
Step Three: Paint it black, of course.
Step Four: Fling it at some bad guy's head.

Knock, Knock

A recent logo project.

The Mighty Thor

This modern world- some fellow on the other side of the planet found my work online and asked me to do a sketch of the Mighty Thor.

The Lafayette Hotel

Buffalo's Lafayette Hotel has been lovingly restored- resurrected, really- by developer Rocco Termini and a cast of thousands. No detail was overlooked; of special interest to us illustrator types, the lobby men's room features gorgeous reproductions of Gil Elvgren's masterful pinups. Bonus: A close examination of the print above reveals that a clever Photoshopper has edited the signature on the young lady's billet-doux- it now reads, "All my love, Rocco."

Erie County Fair Poster (detail)

This was a new thing for us- creating the Erie County Fair poster in a sort of faux-primitive folk art style.

Mad Men

Those clever folks at The Martin Group had me adapt the Mad Men logo for this year's Corporate Challenge T-shirt.

Hula Girl

This made my day- a fellow in California asked if he could put my little Hula Girl pinup on the back of his restored 1968 Donzi speedboat- a nod to his wife, a former Polynesian dancer.

Los Calamares

Through the miracle of the internet we connected with a surf rock band in the UK- Los Calamares. Check them out at http://los-calamares.com.
